We believe that God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! (Romans 5:8-9) We believe the cross is enough. When you look at Romans 5:8-9 the word justified means that you and I stand before God, acceptable, spotless, pure and without sin. That God looks at us and says there is no sin in that man, there is no sin in that woman, and this is the Good News, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
There is nothing about your effort, at all, in the text. There is nothing about your might, your religious stamina, your morality, your cleaning yourself up, we have simply been justified by an act of God
The Cross is enough. Jesus told the thief on the cross in Luke 23:43 “…today you will be with me in paradise” and this is great news. Because from day one, people have been trying to add to the cross in order to be justified in front of God, they want to say; “It’s the cross plus baptism, it’s the cross plus speaking in tongues, it’s the cross plus communion, it’s the cross plus good behavior." The thief on the cross had no time to make anything right. He doesn't get to go home and apologize to his parents; he doesn't get to be baptized, he dosen't get to tell his children sorry, he dosen't get to clean up his mouth, he just gets to die, and Jesus says, “By the end of the day, you’ll be with Me in paradise.”
IT IS SIMPLY THE CROSS It has always been the Cross and it will always be the Cross so that none of us can boast, the only thing we get to boast in is the Cross. Salvation is a gift and occurs in a moment but Jesus also taught us to make disciples and being a disciple takes a lifelong commitment and so we are committed to building up Disciples of Christ. That’s why churches exist. Being a disciple of Christ is tough and you need to be around people that will pray for you, encourage you to not give up, to not quit, and to keep going. As a church, we want to train up people to read their bibles, to follow in baptism, to take communion, to live a repentant life, to live a moral life, to love all people, NOT TO BE SAVED, but because we are saved.
